Weekly Update

 Good Evening Parents,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Please see below for a quick look ahead at the week.

Sub Friday:

This Friday we will have a sub as I have to take two of my children in for their well child checks. We have a sub and the plans are all set. Please remind your child to be on their best behavior. It is challenging to be a sub, especially in a class of 30 ten year olds.

Oreo Cookie Science Activity:

We will wrap up our earth science unit with a fun activity about the phases of the moon using Oreo cookies. Please fill out THIS PERMISSION SLIP by Friday, February 9th in order for your child to participate and enjoy the cookies. If you do not fill out the form or do not want your child to participate, they can still complete the activity using their crayons.

 Focus Areas for Next Week:

  •  Writing: We will continue talking about Biographies. This will lead us into our Famous American Biography project in the coming weeks.

  •  Math:  We will wrap up our  Division unit and review double digit multiplication and long division. Our test on Multiplication and Division will be Monday, February 5th.

  • Science: We will learn about the planets, their order in space and create a book about them.

VA Studies: We will begin Chapter 5- The American Revolution.

Weekly Update

 Happy New Year Parents!

I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing holiday break. It was such a nice treat to be able to sleep in, work out and get some much needed projects completed. I cannot believe that we are just about at the halfway point of this school year! Where is the time going?! Please see below for just a few updates and reminders for next week.

Blood on the River Read Aloud:

Next week we will begin reading the book Blood on the River, The Story of Jamestown 1607 by Elisa Carbone. Your child is welcome to listen to me read the story or get a copy of their own to follow along. You can purchase the book or borrow it from the school or public library.

ChromeBook Usage:

Recently I have had to have several conversations with the students about using their Chromebooks appropriately. Please discuss with your child the importance of staying on task and only using the assigned and approved sites. You can also sign up on ParentVue to receive an emailed list of the sites  that your child is visiting each week and how often they are visiting them! I use this tool myself to track all three of my own children. It’s quite helpful and I make it no secret to them that I receive this information every week! Please also make sure you are checking your child’s browsing history frequently. I would hate for them to come across something they shouldn’t.

MAP Testing:

Next week we will complete our mid year MAP test. Please make sure your child comes to school with their Chromebook fully charged. The schedule for the testing is below.

Monday, January 8th- Math MAP

Wednesday, January 10th- Reading MAP

 Focus Areas for After Break:

  •  Writing: We will begin talking about Biographies. This will lead us into our Famous American Biography project in the coming weeks.

  •  Math:  We will continue with Division. We will be estimating quotients and interpreting remainders.

  • Science: We will begin talking about the Earth, Sun and Moon.

  • VA Studies: We will continue with Chapter 4- Colonial Virginia. Study guides and flashcards went home Tuesday, January 2nd. Please be studying a little each night.
