Weekly Update

 Hi Everyone!

I hope you had a wonderful week! We had a very exciting demonstration on the watershed by the Green Kids Foundation. We couldn’t have picked a nicer day to host it. It was such a treat to get to spend the morning out in the butterfly garden.

Room Mom:

Brittany Jones, (Elizabeth’s mom) has kindly offered to take on the role as our room mom! She is in desperate need of some help to plan and organize our class parties. If you are interested in helping Brittany plan the class parties and other activities, please reach out to her. Her email is bcv725@gmail.com.  She recently created a class directory for us. If you want to be included, please click THIS LINK and type in your information. This is optional, but will help families connect for playdates and birthday parties! You will only receive a copy of the directory if you are a part of it. The last day to add your information is Friday, November 3rd.

Multiplication Facts:

Our next unit in math will be the multiplication unit. In this unit the students will solve 2x2 multiplication problems. It would be helpful if before we get there, your child had their multiplication facts to 12 memorized. To be honest, this will make all the future units a lot easier as we make our way into long division and factors and multiples.

No School:

There is no school on Monday, October 30th and Tuesday, October 31st due to the end of the quarter teacher workdays.

Focus Areas for the Coming Week:

  • Writing:  We will wrap up our first writing unit and finish our final drafts.

  •  Math:  We will begin subtracting numbers into the millions and across zeros using multiple strategies.

  • Science: We will be integrating science into our reading and writing and read some passages about being a scientist, while completing comprehension questions.

  • VA Studies: We will learn how to access and use their VA Studies Newspapers.

Weekly Update

Hi Everyone!

I hope your week was amazing! We had a great week! This week we enjoyed a fun science lesson on gourds with Mrs. Kaz and we will use these same gourds for an exciting writing lesson on Wednesday!

Next week is shaping up to be pretty exciting too! ON Tuesday, we will have someone from the Green Kids Foundation come and model a watershed for us! I will try and send some pictures!

Room Mom:

I wanted to take a moment to thank and introduce Brittany Jones, (Elizabeth’s mom). She has kindly offered to take on the role as our room mom! She has already stepped up and started working on some things for us! She recently created a class directory for us. If you want to be included, please click THIS LINK and type in your information. This is optional, but will help families connect for playdates and birthday parties! If you are interested in helping Brittany plan the class parties and other activities, please reach out to her. Her email is bcv725@gmail.com

Addition and Subtraction:

Please make sure the students are working on their addition and subtraction study guide. This went home a couple of weeks ago and is due Friday, October 27th.

Monday:

I will be out on Monday, October 23rd. I know the students will do a great job in my absence. I will be in by the end of the day to meet with those of you who I have meetings with.

Focus Areas for the Coming Week:

  • Writing:  We will begin writing some free writes in our journal and learn about descriptive writing. We will describe a gourd in writing and see if our classmates can draw it without looking just by hearing our description.

  •  Math:  We will estimate sums of large numbers and learn about the different addition properties. The study guide already went home. Test date will come soon. Study guide questions are due Friday, October 27th.

  • Science: We will be talking about Virginia’s natural resources and the watershed. We have a speaker coming in to demonstrate a watershed.

My husband and sons are away at a baseball tournament this weekend, so naturally Isabelle has a full schedule! This weekend is Lightridge’s Homecoming and Isabelle is running for homecoming court. So needless to say, I will be juggling her to the game, parade and the dance on Saturday. It should be another fun but busy weekend. One day I hope our children realize how much we do for them! I am sure you can all relate! Enjoy this season of life as it will pass quickly!

Weekly Update!

Happy Friday Parents,

It was a great week in 4th grade! As you know, this week we wrapped up our first Reader’s Workshop unit on fiction. The students were so engaged in this unit and the book Tiger Rising! The excitement in the room today leading up to the movie was contagious! It was so nice to see the students so invested and excited! We were able to hold some rich conversations on how a movie and book can be similar yet different. I have taught this unit every year, and it’s still one of my favorites!

Fall Conferences:

As we head towards the second half of the 1st quarter, I would like to meet with each family for a conference to go over student progress, and see how things are going for you so far. These meetings will take place either in person or virtually through Google Meet. Fall conferences will take place throughout the month of October since we have so many students and I am trying to balance all of you and my own family. I will have several options available, and sign ups will be scheduled through a Google Sheet I made. Please click HERE to sign up for a 15 minute conference. If none of these days or times work for you, please reach out and let me know. We will work together to find a time that will work with both of our schedules.

Addition and Subtraction Study Guide:

The study guide for our Addition and Subtraction unit went home this week. Please help your child work on it a little each night as we learn the content. The study guide questions are due on October 27th. Their study guide should be in their homework folder under the ‘Study Guides’ label.

Focus Areas for the Coming Week:

  • Writing:  We are learning the structure of Writer’s Workshop and talking about what makes a good writer. We will set some writing goals!

  •  Math:  We will estimate sums of large numbers and learn about the different addition properties. The study guide already went home. Test date will come soon. Study guide questions are due Friday, October 27th.

  • Virginia Studies:  We will review Chapter 2 - Virginia’s First People and take the test on Wednesday, October 18th. Please make sure your child is looking over their study guide.

  • Science: We will begin talking about Virginia’s natural resources and the watershed.

I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing weekend! My husband is away until Monday so I am on my own juggling all 3 children and their sports! It’s sure to be busy, but I am excited to spend some quality time with them. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out!

I hope your week was amazing! We have had a fun and productive week at school. We recently started our new math and VA Studies units. I am impressed with how quickly the students are picking up the material. We are headed towards some of the more difficult units in the next  month, so establishing good study habits is essential. If you want to get a head, y0u can have your child start memorizing their multiplication facts. That will make the next few units a lot easier for them!

  Hello Parents!

Here is your weekly update and look ahead! We had a wonderful week. This week’s post is full of lots of information and updates. Please take some time to read it.

Addition and Subtraction Study Guide:

A study guide for our Addition and Subtraction unit will be going home on Monday. Please be on the lookout for it. It will be in their Homework Folder under the Study Guide pocket.

VA Studies Study Guide:

We have wrapped up Chapter 1 of VA Studies! We will begin chapter 2 on Monday. Please be on the lookout for that study guide as well. I will get you the date of that test, as we get closer!

Treasure Box:

I am sure you have heard that we have a class treasure box! The students can earn a trip here by taking their time on their work, going above and beyond, or are caught showing the 3R’s by a teacher. However, our class treasure box is running low on goodies! If you have any small party favors or treasure box type goodies laying around, please consider donating them to our class treasure box. Most of the stuff in there I often get from The Dollar Store, Target Dollar Spot and Amazon, so it doesn’t have to be anything too elaborate. The kids are so grateful to just get to pick something!

1st Quarter Interim Progress Reports:

1st Quarter Interim Progress Reports ("interims") will be issued Monday, October 2nd.  If your child receives an interim, it will be emailed to you on Monday, October 2nd using the email address on file in your ParentVue account.  You can update and/or verify your email address by logging into your ParentVue account.  If you are unable to access your ParentVue account, please contact our school office.  (I'm sorry; I'm not able to help you with this - you must contact the office.)

Tiger Rising Permission Slip:

Soon we will wrap up our story Tiger Rising. YAY! The students are really enjoying the story and are engaged in the discussions. I recently told them that they made a movie about the book last year. I would like to watch it in class as a celebration for all their hard work with the book. It is rated PG, so please fill out the permission slip to give them permission to watch it. If you would rather them not watch it, I can make other arrangements for them to visit the library or another classroom during the movie time.

Focus Areas for the Coming Week:

  • Reading:  We will continue Reader's Workshop and read the book The Tiger Rising. We will take a quiz on chapters 11-20 next week. The students can go back and listen to those chapters again on Schoology if needed.

  • Math:  We will begin our second math unit. We will begin Addition and Subtraction. The study guide will go home Monday. Test date will come soon.

  • Virginia Studies:  We will read and discuss Chapter 2 of Virginia Studies. In this chapter we will learn about the different tribes who settled in Virginia, the languages they spoke and how the way they lived related to where they settled in the state.

This weekend I spent my time watching Isabelle perform in the Lightridge HS Marching Band competition on Saturday. She is part of the color guard. It was nice to see all the students showcase all their hard work. I spent today on the ball field watching my sons play baseball. The weather couldn’t have been better! I hope you enjoyed some time outside as well!
