Weekly Update

 Happy Friday!

What a busy week we have had. The kids worked so hard. We spent some time this week watching videos of the school and how different it will be upon their arrival the week of December 1st. I will make sure to send out some pictures of our room next week, along with some videos on how to find it when they arrive their first morning.

We had such a fun lunch bunch today. It was nice to just get to hang out and socialize with the students. Mrs. Assadi, Ms. Higgins and I enjoyed getting to know them.  It was nice to just laugh and get to hear them laughing! That lunch was exactly what we all needed!

Hybrid Dismissal Form

Every student needs to have filled out a HFES Dismissal Form. Please complete this form prior to Tuesday, November 24th if you haven't already. This is required for all students, regardless of mode of transportation. All bus information will be available in ParentVUE, if applicable. If it is not posted when you go in, please keep rechecking.  Please use the attached link to complete the form: HFES Dismissal Form

Supper Meals

Students participating in our Hybrid program who wish to receive a supper meal and snack daily must "opt in" to the program. Please click this link to sign up to receive your free meal to take home. Supper Meal Link

Asynchronous Days

Monday and Tuesday next week will both be asynchronous days for the students. They will log in at 8am both days for their morning meeting and will then work on their asynchronous work. Tuesday is a county-wide asynchronous learning day for 3-5 students as teachers prepare for in-person learning, which begins on Tuesday, December 1st.

Student Directory

I would like to create a class directory for you so the students can communicate if they choose to. You are not required to be included in it, if you chose not to include your contact information. If you would like to be part of it, please fill out the directory form posted HERE. Please have your information in by Monday, November 30th, so I can send the final copy home to families.

Student Spotlight

Does your child have work he/she is really proud of? Maybe they would like to show off how hard they are working at home, or want to show how they are demonstrating the 3Rs. Upload a picture or short video of his/her work to share with the whole school! Images and videos shared will be featured on the Student Spotlight segments on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the morning announcements. Students may not be featured right away depending on how many submissions have been made.

Weekly Update

Dear Parents,

Happy Friday! We have had a busy week! I cannot believe that next week is our last full distance learning week before we go hybrid. Much like you, I am feeling nervous, anxious and excited! Thank you for your support so far this year! I don't have many updates just yet, as A LOT more information is to come next week, but below you will find just a few housekeeping items.

Transition to Hybrid

The time is finally here! I have a meeting on Monday to get more information for us. I will send out all the information next week once I have it. The transportation form will also be sent out next week so please be on the lookout for that.

Recess Equipment

As you saw last night, i am trying to buy some recess equipment for our students to play with during their outdoor recess time. Mrs. Manning (among a couple others) graciously offered to head this up for me. She will be sending out more information in the next few days to get some donations to purchase some things for the students. As always, you are not required to donate, but it is very much appreciated if you can.

Lunch Bunch

To celebrate all the hard work your children have been doing over the past 10 weeks, Mrs. Gumbel, Ms. Higgins and I would like to invite them to eat lunch "with" us on Friday, November 20th. Lunch would still be at the same time as always. They would just log into our normal class meet and eat lunch all together and get to socialize a bit. This is not required, but we thought the students would enjoy a less structured, more social gathering. We are looking forward to eating together next week!

Focus Areas for the Coming Week:

  • Reading:  We continue to work on our Nonfiction unit, in which we learn strategies good readers use when reading nonfiction texts.  We will cover context clues, main idea and begin talking about research.
  • Math:  We will work on subtraction with regrouping unit and work on subtraction across zero.  to determine whether solutions to subtraction problems are reasonable.
  • Science:  We continue talking about Virginia's Natural Resources. The students will be able to name them, tell how they are used and where they can be found. We will also talk about the differences between natural and man-made resources.
As always, please take some time for yourself. This weekend we will celebrate my daughter Isabelle. She is turning 12 on Sunday. Where has time gone?! Enjoy the Fall weather that's on the way this weekend! Reach out anytime you have questions or concerns. 🙂

Weekly Update

Happy Sunday Parents!

The class is getting this 2nd quarter off to a great start! We spent some time last week talking about what worked well for us last quarter, what was hard and we set some new goals. It is always so insightful to get their feedback. They often come up with things I never would have thought about. I am really enjoying getting to talk with them and connect. What a lucky teacher I am this year!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT REPORT CARDS:

Quarter 1 report cards will be issued Monday, November 9th.  Please note:  Paper report cards will NOT be issued. Your child's report card will be available for electronic viewing by logging into your ParentVue account.

If you do NOT have a ParentVue account, you MUST contact Mrs. Shaver or Mrs. Harper in our school office at 703-957-4350 to obtain an authorization key.  I apologize in advance, but I am NOT able to help you with obtaining or accessing your ParentVue account.  You must go through the office.

Focus Areas for the Coming Week:
  • Reading:  We have begun our Nonfiction unit, in which we learn strategies good readers use when reading nonfiction texts.  This unit will last the first half of the quarter. We will wrap it up on December 4th. We will take a quiz on Text Features on Wednesday (Nov. 11th) during Small Group time. The slides to review the features are posted in Schoology in the Reading Course.
  • Math:  We will begin our subtraction with regrouping unit. The students will work on subtracting numbers through the 100 thousands and be able to use rounding and estimation to determine whether solutions to subtraction problems are reasonable.
  • Science:  We learn about Virginia's Natural Resources. The students will be able to name them, tell how they are used and where they can be found. We will also talk about the differences between natural and man-made resources.
Our second quarter has begun!  Thank you for all you've done to help your child adjust to 4th grade.  I am blessed by their sweet presence each day.  Please remember...your feedback is always welcomed and appreciated.
